The End of the Journey for Traveller

#1 here. Having not seen Trav for a week, I was beginning to get very worried. On Tuesday night, I took his meal out to the garage late evening, as I always do. I noticed an unpleasant smell. I looked around and couldn't see anything. Then something made me feel under an old armchair that sits in a corner, covered in a sheet and old throw. There was a miaow. I got on my knees and lifted up the sheet, and there was my poor Trav. He looked awful. Filthy, smelling bad and clearly either injured or ill. For the first time ever, I was able to pat his head a bit, and then he crawled further back. There was nothing much I could do at that time of night, but I put food and water under the chair, within easy reach, and a soft chamois cloth on the ground. I went to bed, determined to get him whatever help he needed in the morning. But on waking up on Wednesday, he was gone and none of the food had been eaten.

I searched for him but did not find him again until around 4pm yesterday afternoon. He had crawled into the winter shelter I had made for him. He looked and smelled absolutely terrible and was covered in maggots. It was the saddest sight I have ever seen. He hissed at me. I went and got a carrier which I could open from the top, put on my big thick leather gloves and proceeded to get him out of there and into the carrier. He managed to bite through the gloves in a couple of places. I immediately went to disinfect and then took him to the vet clinic in town. There was no point in taking him all the way to Dr. C's. It was clear that there was nothing to do other than put him to sleep. The vet thought he had either been run over or had a saddle thrombus. They were very nice there, and first just made him sleep before they euthanised him. Such a sad end for a kitty who had such a tough life but it was one final gift I could give him. Given the maggots, he had obviously been in this state for several days already.

What touched me most deeply was that, despite the awful state he was in, he had managed to come back home, the only home he had ever known. Maybe he wanted to say a final thank you, and I think he knew I would do what I could for him. He is being cremated and I shall get his ashes back in a few weeks, and scatter them over all the places he loved.

Here are some of my favourite photos of him:

Run Free, Sweet Trav. In the last year and a half of your life, you did have a home and people who loved you and cared about you, and you will be remembered.

Mixed emotions from across the pond.
It is a good thing that Trav had the best possible time for the past year and a half. It is a good thing that he could be relieved of his pain. It is so sad that any living thing should have to suffer.
Makes all of us appreciate what is good is our life and want to make things good for others when it is in the power of our hand.
Leaky eye syndrome has spread to PEI. Sending snuggles to you all.

  21. Crushing, heartbreaking news. I am in tears so I can only imagine how you feel. Trav didn't deserve to end a life of deprivation with even more suffering and pain. At least you got to t stroke him. I only can pray that in that brief moment, he felt a lifetime of love conveyed by your gentle touch. You were able to relieve his final suffering and allow him to finally find peace. We'll miss him so much.
Goodbye dear one. We loved you so. We will light the special candle as soon as she finishes this post.

  28. I am so sorry about Traveler! I always loved seeing his photos and knowing that he had a warm bed and good food and a safe place to rest. He knew you loved him even if he couldn't let you get too close. The same thing happened to me many years ago -- a feral kitty who was a friend of my cat and who she'd share her food (with my blessing) came back to my yard when he knew it was the end. Rest in peace, Traveler. You have a lot of friends waiting for you and a lot of humans on this side with leaky eyes today.

  29. My heart grows heavy reading this. I really loved Trav though I never met him. His face was unique and beautiful to me. Virginia, I am so glad he had a home with you for the last year and a half of his life. It must have been difficult for him to make his way back there after what happened to him but he DID find his way back! Doesn't that say everything?!
You did so much for him and you set him free of his pain in the end. That in of itself, is a lot already.
Rest in peace Sweet Trav. You were loved by us even from afar and we will miss you. Virginia, we are sending you our love and support.

i only just now had a chance to catch up on some posts and found this terrible news. Virginia, please know that you made a huge difference in this little soul's life. He was as you so aptly named him, a traveler, yet he chose to adopt you as his family even if he was a bit aloof. When it got to the end he went home. The home you gave him, where he felt warm and dry and had good food and a loving woman who made everything better. We all loved reading about him and as I write this the tears are streaming. How lucky he was, and how lucky we were to share in his journey.

We are so glad Traveller returned home where you could find him and help. It's terrible to worry and wonder. By now his ashes have been scattered, but you won't forget him.
